Celebrate American Heart Month!

In honor of American Heart Month make sure to practice heart healthy habits. Heart disease is one of the top killers in the the US. As part of an initiative to reduce heart attacks, American Heart Month strives to raise awareness about keeping your heart healthy. Check out these tips to keep your heart beating strong.

Control your diet.

Eat a well balanced, nutritious diet. Add more fruits and veggies to your diet. The American Heart Association recommends that you eat fruits and veggies, nuts, low-fat dairy products, skinless chicken, and whole grains. The more nutritious your diet, the better you’ll feel and the healthier your heart will be.

Get your blood pumping.

In order to keep your heart in good shape, make sure to exercise regularly. Your heart is a muscle. The more you strengthen it, the healthier it will be. Ride a bike, take a walk, go for a run. No matter how you choose to exercise, make sure to get at least 30 minutes five days per week.

Find ways to relax.

Stress wrecks havoc on your mind and body. It can increase your risk for anxiety, contribute to aches and pains, and increase your risk for high blood pressure. Reduce your risk for heart disease by learning to relax.

Quit smoking.

Smoking significantly increases your risk for heart disease among other health issues. Specifically, smoking increases your risk for a blood clot and decreases your good cholesterol which is bad for your heart. Quit smoking to keep your heart in great shape.
