Beach Safety Tips to Stay Safe and Sound

Stay safe by the ocean with these beach safety tips.

Living in Southern California, you have the luxury of heading to the beach all throughout the summer. However, before you get too comfortable enjoying the sand and the surf, be wary of the hazards of the ocean. Despite its beauty, the ocean can be dangerous. Check out these beach safety tips to keep you safe in and out of the water.

Be Vigilant.

Always watch your kids while they’re playing in the waves. The ocean is unpredictable, and even the tiniest of waves can be detrimental to your little ones. Have them play where you can see them. Additionally, you may want to put a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket on your less experienced swimmers.

Set Up Camp Near a Life Guard.

While it’s not a safeguard against anything bad from happening, it’s a good idea to be near a lifeguard station. That way you have an extra set of trained eyes to keep an eye on your family while in the water. If there’s no lifeguard on duty, avoid going in the water.

Stay Away from Wildlife.

You’re visiting the beach; be mindful of its native inhabitants. Steer clear of any wildlife as they can be dangerous. Don’t get too close to any birds, fish, or mammals while in the water or on the shore. They are wild animals that have ways to protect themselves if needed. Admire them from a distance.

Beware of Rip Tides.

Rip currents are extremely dangerous. They’re powerful and can drag you out to sea. Before you head into the water, look for signs of rip currents. If there are any warnings, steer clear of the water. However, if you do get stuck in a current, remain calm. Swim parallel to the shore until you’re free. Then you can swim back to shore.
