Pre-OP Information to know about your child's Surgery

Please read the following information in preparation for your child's surgery.

Before Scheduling:

It is necessary to verify insurance coverage, eligibility and benefits. Authorization or pre-certification is obtained when required. This process usually takes 2-5 working days.

Surgery Date and Time:

If possible, we do our best to reserve a surgery time that is convenient for the family. Time and date of surgery depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, doctor's availability, urgency, and insurance authorization. Please keep in mind that whenever possible we try to schedule infants and young children in the morning due to the strict dietary restrictions required on the day of surgery.

On the Day of Surgery:

Patient registration and arrival time is 2 hours before the scheduled surgery time. Please go to the admitting desk of the designated hospital in order to register. Strict dietary restrictions MUST be followed.

Patient Eating Instructions:

• PATIENT MAY HAVE SOLID FOOD UP TO 8 HOURS BEFORE SURGERY

• PATIENT MAY HAVE NON-CLEAR LIQUIDS UP TO 6 HOURS BEFORE SURGERY

• PATIENT MAY HAVE CLEAR LIQUIDS UP TO 4 HOURS BEFORE SURGERY

• MUST HAVE NOTHING BY MOUTH FOR THE 4 HOUR PERIOD IMMEDIATELY BEFORE SURGERY

EXAMPLE: If Surgery is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.:
Between 7:00-11:00 a.m. - Nothing by mouth
Between 5:00-7:00 a.m. - Water/clear liquids only
Between 3:00 - 5:00 a.m. - Non-clear liquids only
Before 3:00 a.m. - Solid Food and Non-clear liquids only
 

SOLID FOOD AND NON-CLEAR LIQUIDS: THIS INCLUDES ANY FOOD, MILK, FORMULA, BREAST MILK, JUICE, NECTAR, VEGETABLE JUICE, JELL-O, GUM, CANDY, MINTS, ETC.

CLEAR LIQUIDS: THIS INCLUDES WATER, CLEAR APPLE JUICE, SUGAR WATER, 7-UP, PEDIALYTE, BALANCED SALT SOLUTION (GATORADE- ORIGINAL ONLY; NOT COLORED)

UNDIGESTED FOOD/DRINK COULD CAUSE PROBLEMS AND MAY REQUIRE RESCHEDULING THE SURGERY

If your child is taking regular medicine for high blood pressure, heart problems, or seizure problems, your child should take that medication on the day of the scheduled procedure unless otherwise told not to by your physician. Oral diabetic medications should NOT be taken in the morning before surgery, unless otherwise instructed by the physician.

This program is approximately 1 hour long and is recommended for children between the ages of 2 1/2 to 10 years old. This program includes a tour, hands on play, and a question and answer session for parents along with handouts to tell parents what to bring on the day of surgery and what to expect. A reservation is required.

Insurance and Payment Information

Contracted Health Plans typically pay a percentage of an "allowed" fee. After insurance pays, the patient is billed for co-insurance and the remaining deductible amounts. Payment in full is due upon receipt of the statement unless other arrangements have been made in advance.

If Pediatric Surgical Specialists is not contracted with your insurance plan, our billing service will bill your insurance for you. However, the patient is responsible for full payment upon receipt of the statement unless other arrangements have been made in advance. For your convenience, PSS accepts Visa and MasterCard for charges over $20.00.
