Spring Clean Your Child’s Health

Spring is a wonderful time of the year when the sun is brighter, birds are chirping and the flowers are in bloom. Spring cleaning your home, diet and activities can benefit your children’s health this season and all year round. However, spring can also trigger your child’s asthma due to pollen, dust mites and. Home cleaning products can also be triggers. Pediatric Surgical Associates, your Orange and Mission Viejo Pediatric Surgeons, have put together a list of tips to spring clean your child’s health.

Play and Bask in the Sun

You and your kids get very little sun exposure during winter, resulting in low level of Vitamin D. Your child’s body will make vitamin D when the skin is exposed to the sun, but the American Academy of Dermatology also warns against over- exposure to sun because it can potentially cause skin cancer. When going out, make sure to use fragrance-free and hypoallergenic sunscreen on your child. Include foods that are naturally rich in Vitamin D, dairy products that have been fortified with Vitamin D and dietary supplements in your child’s diet. Ask your child’s pediatrician for the recommended Vitamin D supplements.

Use Green Cleaning Products

Having a clean home is necessary for a healthy living. However, some cleaning odors and ingredients may trigger or worsen your child’s asthma or allergies. Select certified green or environmental and human-friendly cleaning products that do not contain harsh, poisonous and dangerous ingredients. Read labels and avoid products marked with words Poison, Danger, Caution or Warning. Be careful of the vapors released by cleaning products that we inhale and may irritate the eyes, nose and lungs, such as aerosol air freshener sprays, cleaners, disinfectants and insect repellents. Strictly follow instructions on cleaning products and keep lids tightly sealed when not in use. Search online for resources on how to make your own cleaning products from natural ingredients, such as vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, salt and water.

Boost Your Child’s Immunity

Introduce a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, as well as plenty of sleep, to keep your child’s immune system strong. Pay attention to your child’s reaction to food as some food may trigger allergy or cause diarrhea or constipation. Make sure your kid doesn’t overeat as this can lead to stomachache. Stomachache may also be an indication of more serious abdominal conditions, such as Appendicitis. If your child’s stomachache intensifies and the pain is persistent or comes and goes around the right part of the abdomen, contact Pediatric Surgical Associates in Orange County at (714) 361-4480.
