Check out why you should read with your children!

Instead of sitting them in front of the television after a long day or as you tuck your child into bed at night make it a point to read to your child. These stories aren’t just entertainment for your kids, but they help your child’s development. From phonics to vocabulary, when you read to your child it helps them develop reading and language skills that will help them later on in life. Check out why you should read with your children with these tips to help make reading a part of your household.

  • Lead by example. If you set an example for your kids, they’ll follow in your footsteps. Make an effort to read more around the house. From books to magazines to newspapers, make sure your children see you read. The more your kids see you read, the more they’ll copy your behavior and will learn to value reading too.
  • Set a designated story time. Whether it’s when they get home from school, after dinner, or before bed, be sure to set a time to read to your kids and stick to it. Make it a point to read together every day. Plus, you can work on developing your child’s critical thinking skills by asking them about the book and having a discussion.
  • Limit television time. Rather than letting your kids passively sit in front of a screen, engage your kids in a story. Only allow a set amount of television time so that the remainder of the evening is spent reading or engaging in conversation.
  • Visit your local library. There’s a whole wide world out there filled with books and stories. Explore that world with your child. Make it a habit to visit your local library. Either check out books to read at home or stay for library story time.
