5 Tips on Children’s Water Safety

Keep Your Child Safe by the Water

Here in Southern California, we have the privilege to escape the summer heat by heading to the beach, lake, or any large body of water. This offers us the chance to cool down, play fun activities, and enjoy the summer season to its fullest. While doing this is fun, it’s important to remember safety precautions, especially where children are involved. To help keep your kids safe by water, check out these tips.

  • Supervision

Young kids need constant supervision around water, whether it’s a bucket, paddling pool, swimming pool, or ocean. Young children are especially vulnerable as they can drown in less than 3 inches of water. Always keep an eye on your child when out and about this summer.

  • Swimming lessons

It’s never too early to begin swimming lessons to teach your kids how to swim and to get them comfortable in the water. Consider doing so before heading to your nearest beach or lake.

  • Protection

Teach your kids to be smart in the sun. Don’t forget sunscreen and reapply it frequently, especially when wet or sweating. UV sunglasses, hats, and protective clothing can also help provide sun protection.

  • Hydration

When the weather is warmer, we sweat more. In turn, we need to replenish our fluid often to prevent dehydration. With all the fun and games of summer, children forget to do this. Dizziness, lightheadedness, and nausea are just some of the signs of overheating and dehydration. Even when around water like the ocean and pools, provide your child with plenty of fresh water to keep drinking.

  • Floatation devices

Life jackets must be U.S. coast guard approved and should be considered for young beach-goers. However, don’t rely on them. Swimming lessons can help your child feel confident in the water.
