Use This Guide To Ensure Your Kids’ Teeth Are Getting What They Need

Your child probably knows the basics of maintaining a healthy mouth. Brushing twice a day and flossing regularly are the cornerstones of dental hygiene. Toothbrush and floss aren’t the only things entering their mouths that could make a difference for their teeth, though! Food and water can help or hurt a mouth’s overall health. Here are a few things to know.

  • Add Calcium: We all know that calcium is important for strong bones. Do your kids know that their teeth are made up of similar stuff? That glass of milk can help them maintain a healthy smile! Aim for at least three servings of calcium each day. You don’t always have to look to the milk jug, either. Green vegetables like broccoli contain lots of calcium!
  • Avoid Sugar: It probably comes as no surprise to hear that sugar isn’t great for teeth. That doesn’t mean just laying off the candy, though. There’s sugar in juice, bread, ketchup, and more. Be aware of how much you’re introducing into your children’s diets.
  • Add or Maintain Fluoride: Fluoride gets added to many areas’ water because it’s so good for our teeth; it helps enamel stay strong and replaces key minerals. If you live in an area where the fluoride levels of your water are low – or you use reverse osmosis or bottled water at home – talk to your dentist about introducing a fluoride toothpaste.
