What’s in a date?
Congress voted for independence from Great Britain on July 2. However, it wasn’t until July 4 that Thomas Jefferson submitted the Declaration of Independence to Congress for approval. Additionally, the official declaration of independence day wasn’t recognized until 1870 by Congress. Until then, unofficial celebrations were held across the United States since 1777.
No. 1 Grossing Day for Hot Dog Companies.
It’s not a celebration without hot dogs! The Fourth of July is responsible for a spike in hot dog sales. On the Fourth of July, nearly 155 million hot dogs are eaten according to TIME magazine. Fire up the grill and enjoy a celebration full of these salty snacks.
Shared Independence.
Although gained many years later, Rwanda and the Philippines celebrate their freedoms on July Fourth. The US recognized the Philippines as a sovereign nation on July 4, 1946. Rwanda celebrates Liberation Day on July 4, which recognizes the establishment of a new government in 1994.
Ben Franklin & the Turkey.
As a founding father, Benjamin Franklin played a large role in the establishment of the United States. However, he was displeased with the choice for the national bird. Despite the decision to choose the bald eagle, Franklin would have preferred the turkey.
