About Gastroschisis.
Gastroschisis is a medical condition in which a baby is born with a hole in the abdominal wall, other than the belly button, and the intestines are protruding through the opening. This occurrence is a result of development during pregnancy when the abdominal wall doesn’t form properly.
Risk Factors.
While there is no known cause of gastroschisis, there are factors that may increase the risk for the condition. There may be genetic risk factors that contribute to the development of gastroschisis. However, research has found the risk increases with young mothers in their teens, and mothers that drink alcohol or use tobacco products. These mothers were more likely to have children born with gastroschisis.
Treatment.
Pediatric surgery is needed to correct gastroschisis. Depending on the severity of the condition, surgery is conducted either shortly after birth, or in stages. The smaller the hole, the sooner the surgery. However, if the hole is larger, the surgery may be done in stages.
