How Much is Too Much? Your Kids & Exercise

Children exercising

Knowing when your children need to take a rest.

If you have active kids, you’re probably thrilled! As our country battles childhood obesity, we’re always glad to see children getting in their physical activity. Do you ever worry that your son or daughter may be getting too much exercise, though? If so, read on.

Most kids will regulate their own amount of activity pretty naturally. They play until tired, then take the rest they need. Some boys and girls may be motivated to push through fatigue, however. Maybe they’re trying to earn a spot on a sports team. Maybe they’re trying to impress a new friend group. Maybe they’re trying to please you.

Whatever the reason, over-exercise in kids in dangerous. Generally, an hour a day of physical activity is enough to wear a kid out. If you notice your son or daughter going well beyond that – and especially if he or she doesn’t seem to be enjoying it – it’s possible he or she is getting too much exercise.

There are physical and emotional dangers to over-exercise. Injuries are more common when the body is tired, and tired muscles do less to protect joints. Heat exhaustion is also a concern. Mentally, pushing past the boundaries the body is naturally trying to set can lead to burnout.

Keep an eye on your kids as they engage in physical activity. Does it look like play, or does it look like work? If it’s the latter, work with them to find a kind of exercise they enjoy. Helping your kids find fun ways to stay active now will keep them happy and healthy not just as they grow, but throughout their lives!
