Turn off the TV and pick up a book. The earlier you start, the better. If you have little ones, start reading together every night. That way your kids can check out their favorite books, participate in local reading lists, and enjoy afternoon story time. If you have older kids, encourage them to start reading more often. Have Conversations with Your Kids.
Gone are the days of “children are seen not heard.” Your kids are bright, and although small, they have big ideas. Don’t discredit them just because they’re children. Give them the time of day and listen. When you engage in conversation with your children, you help to develop their critical thinking skills and foster good communication.
Make Homework a Priority.
Nagging your child to do their homework isn’t going to help move the process along. Establish good habits early. Set rules and parameters so that your kids know exactly what they need to do. Give encouragement and make it as easy and fun as possible for your kids to get their homework done.
