Tips to Prevent Common Health Problems in Children

Health Concerns of Children in Summer

Schools are out and so is the sunshine! Summer is here; we can finally rejoice. The holidays offer a break for parents and children alike, with vacations, summer camps, and fun on the horizon. Even though summer should be all about fun and games, it’s important to consider your child’s safety throughout the season. It’s better to be informed of the most common summer health concerns in kids so that you can take adequate precautions.

Dehydration

Getting dehydrated is the most common summer health concern in children, mainly because they’re distracted playing! In hot weather, our bodies need plenty of water to stay hydrated and to keep systems running as they should. The risk of dehydration increases if your children play outdoors, too, where they sweat a lot. The signs of dehydration include extreme thirst, fatigue, and infrequent urination. If this is the case, be sure to give your child plenty of drinking water to sip on.

Sunburn

Playing outdoors during summer is a part of childhood, but even one bad sunburn can quickly halt the fun. Sunburns occur when the skin has been burnt to a degree by the sun’s UV rays, causing the skin to look red, feel sore, hot, itchy or have blisters. It is best to go to the doctor for treatment. You can help to prevent sunburns by keeping kids out of the sun from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and always ensuring they have a liberal amount of sunscreen on.

Insect Bites

Many insects enjoy hot and humid climates, making summer a busy time for them. If your kid plays outdoors more often in summer, they could be at risk of being bitten by insects. It is best to keep doors and windows closed to prevent bugs from coming inside the home. While bites from mosquitoes, ticks, bees, and wasps are usually minor, some can trigger an allergic reaction. In this case, medical attention is required.
