What is an Umbilical Hernia and What Causes It?
Many people are surprised to learn that hernias are fairly common in children. In fact, babies can even be born with them. Hernias in kids can be treated, but it’s important to recognize symptoms so that you can get your child the appropriate medical care.
What is an umbilical hernia?
A hernia is when a section of intestine protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. A soft bulge can be seen underneath the skin where a hernia has occurred. In children, a hernia usually occurs either around the belly button or in the groin area. Hernias that are located in the belly button area is called an umbilical hernia.
When the fetus is growing during pregnancy, there is a small opening in the abdominal muscles so that the umbilical cord can pass through, connecting mother and baby. After birth, the opening in the abdominal muscles closes as the baby matures. Sometimes, these muscles don’t meet all the way, so there is still a small opening present. A loop of intestine can move through the opening between abdominal muscles, causing a hernia.
What causes an umbilical hernia?
Hernias can develop in the first few months after the baby is born because of a weakness in the muscles of the abdomen. Potential causes include:
- Being overweight
- Frequent pregnancies
- Multiple gestation pregnancies (e.g., having twins, triplets, etc.)
- Excess fluid in the abdominal cavity
- Abdominal surgery
- Having a persistent, heavy cough
How Doctors Can Help an umbilical hernia?
First, a doctor will perform a physical exam to determine if an infant or adult has an umbilical hernia. He or she will determine if a hernia can be pushed back into the abdominal cavity or if it is trapped in place. If it is trapped, extra care must be taken because part of the herniated contents may become deprived of a blood supply. An X-ray or ultrasound may be required to ensure there are no complications. In young children, umbilical hernias often heal without treatment. In older people, surgery is usually required.
