How It’s Spread:

The Zika virus is transmitted by mosquitos. However, the virus can also be spread through unprotected sex.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of the Zika virus are generally mild. They tend to include fever, rash, joint pain, and inflammation of the eye. These symptoms can last up to a week or so after being bitten by an infected mosquito. While symptoms are mild, some patients may not even know that they’re infected.

Treatment:

If you’ve recently traveled to a location where the Zika virus has been prevalent and come down with similar symptoms, be sure to visit your doctor. Treatment is similar to that of a cold or flu. Make sure to rest and drink plenty of fluids.

Prevention:

When it comes to preventing the Zika virus, it’s important to be wary of mosquitos and avoid regions that are experiencing an outbreak of the virus. Be sure to wear clothing with long sleeves and long pants, use insect repellent, and keep doors closed.

History:

Despite its sudden popularity, the Zika virus was first discovered in Uganda in 1947, with the first human infection occurring in 1952. In fact, the disease is named after the Zika forest in Uganda. Outbreaks have been discovered all over the world. From Africa to Asia to the South Pacific, and most recently South America, the Zika virus has been present across the globe.
